Capturing the essence of Nancy | Paarl Farm Painting by Scats Esterhuyse

Painting of Nancy historic farm in Paarl

While cycling past a breathtaking farm in Paarl, I was struck by the dramatic clouds framing one of the oldest homesteads in the region, dating back to the mid-17th century. It was a scene I couldn’t resist capturing—a perfect fusion of history and natural beauty.

Since settling in Paarl in November 2016, the ever-changing clouds over the surrounding mountains have been a constant source of inspiration. On one particular afternoon, while cycling over the railway bridge on my way to the mall, I witnessed a spectacular cloud formation illuminated by the setting sun. The farm, Nancy, stood as the centerpiece of this natural theater, its rich history harmonizing perfectly with the composition before me. It was a serendipitous moment—a reminder that the best works often emerge when you find yourself in the right place at the right time.

Painting the sky over Nancy felt like a continuous flow of rhythm and harmony. It reminded me of music, where the first take often captures the rawest, most authentic emotion. The pale phthalo blue sky, juxtaposed with stormy grey clouds, created a striking contrast above the tranquil homestead. In the distant horizon, the warm ochre glow of the setting sun gently faded, signalling the end of another day on the farm. Below, rows of steadfast grapevines swayed lightly in the evening breeze, adding a touch of life to the serene landscape.

After completing the painting, I arranged a meeting with Aat Hoekstra, the farm's owner. Over a cup of coffee, Aat shared his story—a journey that began in the Netherlands, where his family cultivated flowers, and brought him to Paarl. He explained that the farm was named Nancy after a riverfront town in France, a nod to the heritage of a previous owner who had migrated from there.

Mr Aat Hoekstra passed in January of 2022, meeting Aat before his passing was a privilege. He was a warm, humble and mature man who left a lasting impression. His presence brought depth to the painting and to the story of Nancy—a story I feel honoured to have captured on canvas.
